Hash Generator

Type any text or pick a file and get its MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-2 hashes instantly, then paste a checksum to verify a download. Everything is computed in your browser, so it is safe for sensitive data.

FAQ

Hashing, explained

What is a hash?+

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of some data. The same input always produces the same hash, but you cannot reverse the hash back into the original text. Hashes are used for checksums, integrity checks, and storing password verifiers.

Which algorithms does this tool support?+

It computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 for any text you type or any file up to 50 MB. The SHA family uses the browser’s built-in Web Crypto, and MD5 uses a self-contained implementation since Web Crypto does not include it.

How do I check a download against its checksum?+

Choose Hash a file instead and pick the file, then paste the checksum from the download page into the Compare box. The tool tells you which algorithm matches, or warns you if none do. The file never leaves your computer.

Is my text sent anywhere?+

No. Every hash is computed locally in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded or stored, so it is safe to hash sensitive strings.

Should I use MD5 or SHA-1 for security?+

No. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes because collisions can be crafted. They are fine for non-security checksums and legacy compatibility. For anything security-sensitive, use SHA-256 or stronger.

Why is the hash of empty input still a value?+

Hash functions are defined for zero-length input too, so an empty box still produces a valid hash. For example MD5 of an empty string is d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e. Start typing to see the hashes update live.

Can a hash be reversed back into the original text?+

No. A hash is a one-way function, so the input cannot be computed from the output. Attackers guess instead: they hash likely inputs and compare the results. That is why short or common passwords fall quickly even though the hash itself cannot be reversed.

What is the difference between SHA-256 and SHA-512?+

Both belong to the SHA-2 family and both are considered secure. SHA-256 produces a 64-character hex digest and SHA-512 a 128-character one. SHA-256 is the usual choice for file checksums, and SHA-512 can be faster on 64-bit processors.
