Discord Character Limits for Messages and Embeds
Discord caps how much text fits in a message, an embed, and most names. Go over in the app and Discord offers to send your text as a file instead; go over from a bot or a webhook and the message is simply rejected.
Messages
A message holds up to 2,000 characters. Nitro raises that to 4,000 for the messages you type, Nitro Basic does not, and bots and webhooks stay at 2,000 whatever their owner pays for. The count is the raw text you send, so markdown symbols and the full <@ID> form of each mention count too.
Embeds
Embeds have their own, larger limits: 256 characters for the title, 4,096 for the description, up to 25 fields with 256-character names and 1,024-character values, and 2,048 for the footer, with 6,000 in total across every embed in a message. Discord Embeds Explained covers each part.
Names
Usernames run from 2 to 32 characters and server nicknames from 1 to 32. Channel and role names allow up to 100, and webhook names up to 80.
Splitting long text
To post something longer, split it at paragraph or line breaks rather than mid-sentence. If a part ends inside a code block, close the block and reopen it at the top of the next part, or the formatting spills into everything after it. The Discord Message Splitter does both and numbers the parts.
FAQ
What is the Discord character limit?+
2,000 characters per message, or 4,000 for Nitro subscribers. An embed description allows 4,096.
Why does my bot get a 400 error on a long message?+
The text is over 2,000 characters or an embed is over one of its limits. Bots never get the Nitro limit, so split the text or move it into an embed description.
